Diligence occurs 10 times in Scripture and diligent 51 times. Here are some key instances:

Keep your heart (the centre of your desires and motives) with all diligence (Prov.4:23). Be diligent and try to avoid going to court (Luke 12:48). Rule (as an elder) with diligence (Rom.12:8). Be diligent to get assurance (Heb.6:11). Be diligent to add to your faith virtue (II Peter 1:5). Give diligence to make your calling and election sure (II Peter 10).

Diligence means careful and persistent work or effort.

It comes from the Latin “ to delight in” and of course you will take care to do well in what you delight in.

Here are some hints on being diligent:

  • Remove distractions e.g. a phone
  • Be organized-have a “to do” list.
  • Prioritize

The Christian is called to be diligent in everything he sets his hand to (Col.3:23). Diligence in listening to and obeying God’s voice is always rewarded (Deut. 6:17, 28:1-3, Prov.13:4, Heb.11:6) This entails regular prayerful intake of the word:

What more could a human being want than the blessing of God?

Ye that fear the Lord, trust in the Lord: he is their help and their shield.

The Lord hath been mindful of us: he will bless us; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.

He will bless them that fear the Lord, both small and great.

The Lord shall increase you more and more, you and your children.

Ye are blessed of the Lord which made heaven and earth.

The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord‘s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

The dead praise not the Lord, neither any that go down into silence.

But we will bless the Lord from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the Lord.

Psalm 115.

Prayer for the beginning of the day

” Cause me to hear thy loving-kindness in the morning; for in thee do I trust: cause me to know the way wherein I should walk; for I lift up my soul unto thee.” Psalm 143:8

Lovely and key message why we need to seek God’s face first thing in the morning.

David couldn’t start a new day without hearing of God’s loving-kindness and grace. This is the position of every repentant sinner (believer). This habit enables the killing of sin, service of God and the blessing of others, directing us into holiness.

Sermon on Psalm 143:8

2017 January 1st

The Apostle John wrote, “Blessed is he that readeth and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein:” The Bible reading plan for 2017 starts today and I plan to share a few thoughts on the daily passages with the prayer they might be helpful to others.

Genesis 1-3:24.  The very first sentence in Scripture makes it clear to me the earth is unique, God has NOT made other inhabited worlds or aliens, there is only one life-sustaining earth, hence the folly and waste of money searching for other life in the universe! The greatest understatement ever made follows viz., “He made the stars also”.

Trillions of galaxies made up of millions of stars, most of which would make our sun look miniscule comprise the vast universe of stars. Yet God planned to reveal himself supremely and decreed to play out the great battle of history for the glory of his name on one unique tiny blue planet.

The creatures were made “after their kind” which we are told by creation scientists means after their family kind rather than species. So God made the first dog and cat from which we got every species of dog/wolf and cat/big cat.

Man lost the image of God which is righteousness and true holiness (Eph.4:24) when he fell. Mankind are now born in the image of Satan (John 8:44).

We are just made of dust, of the same chemicals that make up earth, hence a cremated body is just ash dust.

God ordained marriage, not fornication (shacking up or living with a girlfriend). He called Eve Adam’s wife after he had performed the first wedding. The lifelong commitment of marriage between one man and one woman is vital for proper family life as God ordained it.

Satan made out God to be a scrooge or killjoy (Gen.3:1), he still lies to men in the same way today. Eve usurped her place in taking of the forbidden fruit and Adam did not stop her, thus reneging on his responsibility. She was deceived and he willingly sinned. This is why we have Paul’s apostolic and authoritative word that women are not to lead or teach in churches (I Tim.2:12-15).

The antithesis begins in 3:15. God creates enmity between the seed of the woman (Christ and the church) and the seed of the serpent (the wicked). Christ shall break the head of the serpent and kill him.

Work is for man’s sake (3:17).
