Notes from Faith Made Perfect by Herman Hanko.
We have been given tongues to communicate with God and each other. To make proper use of the tongue is to make proper use of the whole body. God uses his word to always speak truth to all peoples, calling them and saving them or hardening them, building them up and feeding them. We need his word (Matt.4:4). God speaks to his people and we respond to him. Covenant fellowship requires conversation. We need to listen. Men naturally tell lies, contradict God and seek their own glory. They make no mention of God who gave them their ability and the power of speech. When a man controls his tongue and serves God he is fulfilling his purpose. The power of the tongue is compared to fire, a horse’s bridle and a ship’s helm or rudder.
