Hosea 5. (Harlotry in the Mosaic Law).

Sung Psalm 78:56-62 (note jealousy v58)

Reading Exodus 34:10-17

Whoredom is what the church does! BC and AD!

The most famous harlot in Scripture was Rahab, mentioned in three books, and ancestor of David and Christ. The ultimate harlot is the false church of Babylon (Revelation 17).

Looking at the LAW of Moses. We read commands given to Israel immediately after the golden calf idolatry (Ex.32). images

References to marriage in the passage are v10-they were God’s covenant people (Mal.2:14). Also v14 God’s jealousy (Numbers 5:11-31 were laws governing jealousy).

The stages of whoredom are 1) making treaties 2) accepting  invitations to idolatry 3) mixed marriages.

God commands 1) no covenant 2) no idol worship 3) destroy their altars. Interestingly to my mind II Corinthians very much corresponds with these ideas especially II Cor.6:14 where wrong relationships are abhorred and II Cor.6:14 where polemical teaching and witness destroy false theology-JK.

In Leviticus 17:3-7 we are taught that all other worship, outside of the Triune God through Christ, is idolatry and worship of demons! The context here is God’s holiness and the people’s devotion to him.

Leviticus 20:1-8 refers to Molech worship which is the ancient equivalent of modern abortion which is actually state-sponsored Molech worship and the idolatry of selfish ease. Séances and horoscopes are also the equivalent of wizardry, necromancy and consulting familiar spirits.

Numbers 15:37-41 are God’s command to make blue fringes on the hems of garments to remind the people of heaven and the keeping of his commandments through covetousness (note also Matt.23:5 and 9:20, 14:34)

Deuteronomy 31:16-17, 32:16 are prophetic.

A very interesting theme indeed!
